Do you know what pisses me off? When people call 5 Seconds of Summer a boyband. It’s because they toured with One Direction, isn’t it? Well let me tell you something. 5SOS got discovered by Hot Chelle Rae and went on tour with them first. Not just One Direction. Also, they play their own music as well write their own songs and don’t sing about girls 24/7. They have written with Alex Gaskarth. They have written with The Madden Brothers and have written with John Feldman (who is a huge legend and not that you would know who he is). As well has been welcomed by the pop punk community by bands like Blink 182 (I’m pretty sure Tom mentioned them before), Green Day (Billie Joe tweeted about them) and All Time Low (they became good friends). 5SOS did a cover for Kerrang on the Green Day tribute CD. Which by the way they sang American Idiot. I think 5 Seconds of Summer’s music is great in my opinion. It has meaning and like I said before, they don’t sing about girls 24/7. Alexander Deleon became friends with them and invites them to parties, Kellin Quinn has tweeted the band, Jenna McDougall is friends with 5SOS, Josh Ramsay wants to hang out with Luke, Pete Wentz has tweeted Ashton, Austin Carlile tweeted Michael, Aaron Pauley wants to hang out with Michael, Rian Dawson wants to drum with Ashton I believe and Jack Barakat called 5 Seconds of Summer pop punk. They’ve been on the cover of Rock Sound and Alternative Press.
You won’t accept them because of their “boyband” image

A lot of people ask me, ‘How did you have the courage to walk up to record labels when you were 12 or 13 and jump right into the music industry?’ It’s because I knew I could never feel the kind of rejection that I felt in middle school. Because in the music industry, if they’re gonna say no to you, at least they’re gonna be polite about it.
There was a little demo I made when I was 11, and I think it’s floating around the Internet. It’s called “Smoky Black Nights,” and it’s all about being at the Shore. Then there’s the song “Invisible,” which is about the son of my parents’ friends. They were always at my house and their son was my age, and he would always tell me about other girls he liked. I felt, well, invisible. Obviously. So I wrote that song about it, and it was a bonus track on my first album.
